Testing Your Way to Growth
The Sunday Signal - 29 March 2026
We assume deep personal change requires big moves. We wait for a lightning bolt of clarity, a “burning bush” moment that will finally deliver the breakthrough, catapulting us across the gap between who we are and who we wish to become.
But if you really want to break free of limits and unskillful habits, it’s best to experiment with small steps.
Brave? Yes. Billboard? No.
Why not?
The Trap of “Clarity First”
If we wait to figure it all out, we may never move. Truth is, movement almost always precedes clarity. Engagement with reality is what improves understanding of reality.
You can’t analyse your way to a fulfilling life because the map of your fulfillment hasn’t been drawn yet. It is being created by your footsteps.
Yes, clarity is screened from us, but not by a thick opaque door. There are circularities, feedbacks in life learning that mean clarity sits beyond scores of diaphanous veils. Together, they hide it completely. But as you address and skirt each one, your best route beyond the next is slightly better illuminated.
Negotiating with Cerberus
A protective, conservative part of us does all it can to hold us in the “safe” confines of the familiar. I’ve spoken of Cerberus—that protective, barking aspect of our nervous system that guards the “Gate” of the status quo.
It can use brute force - our fear of somatic discomfort - to keep us in line. But it also employs the honey-trap of the “grand plan” or “theory of everything” to keep us right where we are.
Even if our intellect were able to leap straight to the perfect moon shot of personal growth, we would have to bring Cerberus on board. And he’s going nowhere fast. We don’t negotiate our freedom from him by the mile, but by the inch.
Try to sprint past him or drag him along toward a massive life change, and he will growl you to a halt. (He is your protector, so he won’t bite you. But the fear of his bite is enough.) He will trigger the “noise” of anxiety, overthinking, paralysis and self-sabotage to keep you “safe”.
The secret to moving through the Gap of human freedom described by philosopher and psychologist Viktor Frankl is to spend time there with Cerberus, demonstrating to him patiently that you are capable and responsible enough to navigate the ship of the psyche into new waters.
When you frame a move as a “Low-Stakes Test,” you are whispering to your nervous system: “This isn’t an irreversible commitment. It’s just a trial - so even failure is safe.” This lowers the internal noise. It allows you to move and, more importantly, to listen and learn.
The Feedback Loop of the Soul
Self-leadership is simply Courageous Curiosity in Patient Motion. Courage chooses engagement over analysis. Curiosity keeps you open to learning. Patience wins over Cerberus. Every choice is an experiment:
Try: A new boundary, a creative risk, a different way of responding to a spouse or colleague.
Observe: What happened? Am I okay?
Reflect: How did it feel in my body? Can I weather that again?
Refine: Based on that taste, do I want more or less? What would you change?
Repeat: Ease Cerberus forward another inch. Eventually, you’ll move in feet & yards.
Clarity doesn’t come from spell-checking the recipe; it comes in the tasting. Those who grow the fastest aren’t the ones with the best five-year plan; they are the ones who keep engaging and experimenting with the reality they are co-creating.
The Weekly Experiment
If you’ve been stuck on the start line, waiting for the “perfect recipe” before you start the feast, I want to invite you to run a “Small Test” this week.
Ask yourself: 👉 What is one small, low-stakes experiment I could run this week... just to see behind the next veil?
Don’t look for a prize at the end of the test. The fulfillment is in the testing itself. It’s in the realization that life isn’t a final exam that sets you against an “objective” standard - it’s a creative exploration you’re invited to lead.
The Next Session
Navigation Lab: Open Studio Thursday, 2 April at 6pm UK time
I’ll be in the studio this Thursday to dive deeper into safe-to-fail design and somatic self-leadership. This is where I record the session for our archive, but the door is very much open.
You are welcome to drop in to observe the inquiry, participate in the practice, or bring your own current “start lines” to the table. If you can’t make it live but have a question you’d like me to address in the recording, just reply to this email.
