Life’s Two-Fold Purpose
The Sunday Signal - 8 March 2026
One of the most persistent and draining questions we carry is: “What is my life’s purpose?”
We often imagine it as a hidden treasure map or a specific destination we haven’t yet reached. We worry about “missing” it, or we exhaust ourselves trying to build a self-image that looks “purposeful” to the outside world.
But life doesn’t serve some distant, other purpose. Life is its own purpose. It is the continuous expression and experience of itself. Therefore, you fulfill your purpose not by achieving a fixed goal, but by engaging in the two-fold movement of being alive: Expressing and Experiencing.
The Two Roles
In every moment, you are playing two inseparable roles. They are the two wings of Life’s flight:
The Creative Role (Expressing): This is your unique participation in the “objective” reality stream. It is the effortless expression of who you are right now - ever-changing, dancing, and wriggling with the present moment. It is your part (including your thoughts, perceptions and feelings), of what is happening universally.
It requires no commitment or intention, but it may well include them. It is indifferent to success or failure, but it may include a drive for the first and fear of the second. Your words and actions are a minute but magical component of its intricate whole. The Witnessing Role (Experiencing): This is your inherent capacity to “drink life in.” It is the intimacy of meeting exactly what is happening - the joys, the tragedies, and the mundane - including the distorting effects of your filters, preferences and misconceptions.
Free of objective qualities or limits, it is the spacious stage on which Expressing plays out. It is also the “audience” for the spectacle.
Experiencing is automatic. It can’t be turned on / off, and it can’t be directed or focused. It is the left wing to Expressing’s right wing in Life’s flight.
If this depiction is accurate, then who is the one concerned with purpose?
The Friction of the Image
We stumble when we mistake our self-image for our Self.
Our self-image is a construct of definitions and a sense of separateness from Life’s overarching expression. This image seems to be the seat of the Witnessing Role, but it is only part of Expressing. It is “sticky” or “frozen” - it seems to want to stand fixed in a world that is wild and untameable.
When life’s waves crash against these fixed definitions, “uncomfortable sensations” arise in the body. These too are part of Life’s Expression.
We often try to run from this discomfort or “fix” it, but these sensations are actually signposts. They show us exactly where a dead image is superposed on (yet still within!) a living, breathing reality. This may be a gift to shift our sense of identity from the dead thing to the living one!
The Effortless Wave
You cannot fail to play the role Life asks of you. You have always fulfilled your life’s purpose as an effortless aspect of reality’s cresting wave. Any secondary or relative purpose sits within that inherent one.
When the search for a purpose gives way to a recognition of our role in the expression and experience of being, the exhaustion of “seeking” begins to dissolve into the simple intimacy with what is.
